A BIG THANKS TO THE POWER WORKERS' UNION

Thanks to the Power Workers' Union local 1000 for their generous donation of $250. Donations of this kind are generally used to replace ageing equipment (think of the circa 1980's skates that are starting to fall apart)

LONDON HOSTED FIRST WESTERN MEET OF THE SEASON

London Speed Skating Club hosted the first Western Regional meet of the 2011/12 season on October 15th & 16th 2011. The meet was held in the Dorchester Arena. Cindy Van Lierop did her usual outstanding job organizing the meet - thank you Cindy!! and thank you to the dozens of volunteers both within our club and from other clubs who helped to make the meet runs smoothly.

For the 17 London skaters, we had 3 skaters skating thier first ever meet, 3 medals, 16 top 10 finishes and 27 pb's. London skater results can be found on the "News" tab and the full protocol can be found on the "Competitions Registrations/Results" page.

SSC FILM SHOOT IN LONDON

Over the July 25th weekend, seven skaters from the London Speed Skating Club along with three more from the Cambridge Speed Skating Club had an amazing opportunity. Christine Nesbitt, Olympic gold medalist, World Cup champion, and member of the London club, was in town with her coach, Mark Wild, and together the group took part in a day-long film shoot for Speed Skating Canada. Our skaters had the opportunity to perform technical drills and skate with Christine, receiving valuable feedback from both her and Mark.

Christine also signed autographs, answered questions, and posed for pictures.

This opportunity stemmed from other initiatives we had done at the London club in conjunction with the television and film students at Fanshawe College and their instructor, who is a member of the London club. Our work came to the attention of Douglas Duncan at SSC, who saw the possibilities of taking it several steps further. The Fanshawe crew were innovative in their approaches and adaptation of equipment, and were therefore able to capture a lot of great video footage from optimum angles for educational purposes.

When all is done, the video will be added to a bank of web resources that SSC is developing.
